JOHN O’SHEA’S thunderbolt handed Manchester United a vital Champions League advantage over Arsenal. The home side dominated the game and the Irish full-back put them ahead when he smashed the ball home from close range after 16 minutes. Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia had an inspired night between the posts and kept the Gunners in it but United will feel they should have killed off the tie with the amount of opportunities they had. Asked if they should have scored more, O’Shea said: “Possibly with the chances we had. Their keeper has made a couple of great saves. "On our first-half display we could have been a couple more goals up. “But we have the goal, we kept a clean sheet and we know we’re capable of scoring an away goal at the Emirates. “But it’s definitely not over. We tried to squeeze play up the pitch as much as we could, to keep the pressure on Arsenal. “It worked very well, especially in the first half. Arsenal are a good team, they kept the ball well at times and it’s hard to get it back from them. “At the Emirates, we need to improve on retaining possession. “But overall we have to be happy.” Spanish stopper Almunia clawed Wayne Rooney’s looping header away from the far post in the opening minute of the game and blocked Carlos Tevez’s close-range effort 15 minutes later. But the Gunners failed to trouble Edwin van Der Sar in the United goal during the opening exchanges, despite a continued spell of possession towards the end of the first period. Rooney flashed a curling shot just wide from 20 yards as United looked to finish the half on top. A short backpass from rookie left-back Kieran Gibbs almost allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to nip in but Almunia once again made a sliding block to make the save. The second half started brightly for the home side, with Brazilian midfielder Anderson trying his luck from 20 yards out, only to see his shot blaze over. The visitors pushed forward but Emmanuel Adebayor was deprived of service from the Arsenal midfield and cut a frustrated figure up front. However, 10 minutes into the second half, the Togo hitman made space for a half-volley after chesting the ball down 18 yards out, but fired his effort over. United then brought on Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov for the final 24 minutes, as Anderson and Tevez made way. The Red Devils continued to dictate the play and Ronaldo’s speculative 30-yard effort on 68 minutes rattled Almunia’s crossbar. Arsenal made a change when Nicklas Bendtner replaced the ineffective Theo Walcott on 71 minutes. Michael Carrick fired wide from 30 yards as United stepped up a gear in search of a second goal. Ronaldo threatened to make it two when he got on the end of Rooney’s cross but the World Player of the Year headed over from six yards out. Giggs had the ball in the back of the net after latching on to Rooney’s throughball before rounding Almunia but his effort was ruled offside. Arsene Wenger hauled Adebayor off with seven minutes remaining, the African forward being replaced by Eduardo. But the Croatian's introduction failed to spark a comeback from the away side and O'Shea's early strike means United will take a vital advantage into next Tuesday's second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
And with Petr Cech returning to his form of old, it gives Chelsea every chance of progressing to the Champions League final in Rome.
Other than a glorious opening handed to Didier Drogba by a Daniel Alves slip just before half time, the Blues didn’t create a chance throughout the entire 90 minutes.
No sooner was possession won by Hiddink’s side than it was given back to Barca to weave their intricate passing in wave after wave of attack.
But after Cech had flapped at two routine crosses in the first five minutes, he went on to have an inspired night.

In front of him, skipper John Terry was assured and the resurgent Alex coped admirably with the pace and trickery of Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry.
With Ashley Cole suspended, Jose Bosingwa deputised at left-back in an attempt to shackle Lionel Messi - and for the most part he did an exceptional job.
But the 21-year-old Argentine is simply irrepressible and was still at the heart of many of Barca’s thrusts.
Xavi hit a powerful drive wide from the edge of the box just before the half hour mark and, after Michael Ballack was cautioned, Henry twice cut in from the left to hit low drives that Cech kept out at his near post.
An ongoing feud between Alves, Drogba and Florent Malouda ensued as tempers frayed and Yaya Toure saw yellow for whinging about a foul on Andres Iniesta.
On 38 minutes came the chance of the game for Drogba.
A shocking back pass by Alves was seized upon by the burly frontman, Valdes beat out his first effort and when the Ivorian tried to lift the rebound over him, the Barca stopper threw out two big hands to claw the ball away.
The second-half didn’t get going for 10 minutes with a trio of Barca players left writhing in agony.

First Henry was pole axed after a clash of heads with Alex, then Rafael Marquez had to be stretchered off and replaced by Carles Puyol.
Finally, Alves was sent sprawling after the faintest of touches by Drogba
Messi volleyed high from a corner on the hour, Alves powered in a drive that Cech blocked and then Eto’o ran from the halfway line, turned Alex, only for the indomitable stopper to again thwart him from close in.
Ballack escaped a second yellow for what looked a blatant body check on Iniesta with five minutes left.
Eto’o was replaced by Bojan Krkic with 10 minutes remaining as Pep Guardiola rolled the dice.
And the teenager missed the home side’s best chance, turning a close range header over from an Alves cross.
Fellow sub Alexander Hleb could also have scored in the dying seconds but Cech, who else, was again on hand to save. - The Sun
Liverpool are reported to have held talks with Indian billionaire Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao over a potential £500m takeover at Anfield.Representatives of Rao's GMR Group were guests at the Merseyside club earlier this week and witnessed the 4-4 draw with Arsenal.
The News of the World report that Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks opened negotiations with Rao initially with a view to arranging a sponsorship deal, but the Indian businessman who made his fortune in the airport and construction industries is thought to be considering a major investment in the club which could lead to an eventual takeover.
A source told the News of the World: "The GMR group were invited by Hicks and their representative watched the Arsenal match in the directors' box with Hicks' son Tommy. It was quite clear the representative was a fan".
Hicks and his co-owner George Gillett could be forced to sell Liverpool in July unless they can refinance £350m of loans the duo took out in order to takeover the club.
The two US sports investors have endured a fractious relationship since joining forces at Liverpool, arguing over the governance and direction of the club, but recently have presented a united front as they strive to attract new finance.
Both Hicks and Gillett were present at Anfield for the Arsenal match and met with Rao's representative.
Liverpool are also understood to have held talks with a Kuwaiti investment group, led by Naffer Al Kharafi.
Liverpool went top of the Premier League on Saturday after beating Hull City 3-1, but their lead over title rivals Manchester United was short-lived as the Red Devils reclaimed the lead a few hours later with a stunning 5-2 comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Darren Bent and Luka Modric had fired Tottenham to a 2-0 lead at the break, giving hope to Rafa Benitez’ title chasers hope.
But the game swung on 57 minutes, when Heurelho Gomes was adjudged to have brought down Michael Carrick by referee Howard Webb.
The decision was a shocker, but Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t care, slotting home from the spot to start the fightback.
Wayne Rooney then kicked into overdrive, firing home twice either side of a second for Ronaldo in a four-minute blitz.
Dimitar Berbatov then prodded home No5 for the home side, to complete a sensational fightback against his former club.
And with his side now three points clear with a game in hand, Alex Ferguson must surely know his 23rd season will end with his hand on the Premier League trophy for the 11th time.
Lennon started out well, with some probing runs down the right causing problems for the United defence.
The first genuine chance came from the nippy winger, with Bent heading a cross straight at Edwin Van der Sar at the near post.
Spurs were getting physical, with some crunching tackles from Palacios and Jenas in the midfield.
As a result Ronaldo had a sighter at goal from a free kick, the Portuguese star claiming a handball in the wall.
His appeals were turned down, and soon after Tottenham opened the scoring on 29 minutes courtesy of Bent.
Lennon powered down the right, before his ball back saw Vedran Corluka curl the ball in from a deeper position.
England striker Bent fluffed his headed first attempt, but the ball dropped kindly for his to thrash home from inside six yards.
Worse was to follow for United four minutes later when Lennon swung over another cross from the same flank, this time beyond all the United defenders.
Modric was free to chest the ball down, before stabbing home at the near post.
The visiting fans were almost as stunned as their hosts given Tottenham have not won a league game at Old Trafford since 1989.
Heurelho Gomes was then called into action three times before the break, as Ferguson’s men looked to get back into the game.
The Brazlian got behind Rafael’s long-range effort, before producing a fine stop from Ronaldo.
Jonathan Woodgate was booked for a foul on the winger, whose free-kick cannoned back off the Spurs wall.
Ronaldo then unleashed a lob towards the top corner, only for Gomes to claw the ball out.
The stopper was also equal to a powerful shot from Rooney before Jenas was booked for a foul on Fletcher.
Ferguson introduced Tevez for Nani at the interval, but it was an intervention from referee Webb that got his side back into the game.
Amid the pandemonium that followed his penalty decison, Ronaldo kept his head to score from the spot.
Tevez then made his first contribution 10 minutes later, setting up Rooney for the equaliser with a flicked pass.
The England striker cut inside before shooting low and beating Gomes at his near post.
Within a minute United were in front, Rooney this time providing the cross which a diving Ronaldo headed home.
United were not finished as Ronaldo picked out Rooney with a far-post cross.
The England striker beat Gomes but it seemed Woodgate would clear only for the defender to drag the ball over the line as he slid in to block.
Goal No5 arrived 11 minutes from time, Rooney providing the cross this time and Berbatov the finish.
The Bulgarian belted home after Gomes had stopped his initial header and then got in a tangle with Jenas.
